I think I've shared on our blog before that it's only been in the last couple of years that our furry friends have begun to forgive us for having children. We adopted Mary as a 1 year old cat in 2001 and Joe we adopted as a kitten in 2002. So they had lots of time with just us before the boys came along in 2004 and 2007.
Our beautiful Siamese "Miss Mary" was the first to come around and warm up to the boys.
Every morning she goes in with me to wake the boys up for school and
sits with them while they eat breakfast. She can usually be found in the living room with the boys and often joins us on the bed for storytime at night.
She is very attached to Parker, and is slowly getting more friendly with Wesley.
Tonight Wesley and I were curled up on the couch watching a movie and
Mary crawled right up in our laps - half on me and half on Wesley.
He was over the moon thrilled and scared to death to move because he didn't want to frighten her.
Parker took a picture on Daryl's phone to document this momentous occasion.
Then later she wandered down to get some attention from Parker while he was building Legos.
Joseph (aka Joe or Joey Bear) has also really warmed up to the boys in the last few weeks. Parker remarked just a few days ago that Joe has turned into a nice kitty and doesn't growl as much! In his defense he only growled at them while running frantically in the other direction - we've always joked that Joe should have feathers and not fur because he's such a big chicken. But he now joins Mary in helping to wake up the boys and has even dared to let Wesley pet him a bit.
We're so thankful for the softening of our furry friends towards the boys. We only hope they don't revert back to their former behaviors when we add another little boy to the mix this summer!
